2013 FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

 

VALLEE DE LA COURSE:

The Illuminations. A colourful 3 day night-time festival from the 15th August now in its 28th year. Hundreds of private floodlit gardens full of bright flowers to visit. Various attractions, activities and refreshments in each village as the villagers compete to attract the carloads of visitors who drive from all over the region to snake through the blacked-out Vallee. Unique.

Journee de Peintres. Calling all painters! Come and set up your easel in your choice of any of the 19 picturesque villages in the Vallee. Usually held
during the last week of May.

Flea Markets (Bocantes). Sunday morning markets held at various villages in the Vallee and throughout the region from April to end October. Great bargains to be had from the stalls of the villagers.


AMIENS:

Festival of the Hortillonnages. A re-creation of a mediaeval festival taking place on the floating gardens (les Hortillonnages) of the garden district and only reached by gondoliered flat bottomed boats. Shop for the weekly veg as you are punted along. Weekend mid June.

Jazz Festival: Featuring artists from all over the world this magnificent festival takes place during the last week of March - this year coinciding with the Easter break.


ARRAS:

Festival of the Giants. The famous giant figures, floats and brass bands fill the centre of the historic old town closed off to traffic for the festival which takes place at the end of March.


DUNKERQUE:

300 Year old Carnival & Mardi Gras. Hundreds of brass bands with male members buxomly cross-dressed in mini skirts, wigs and big flowery hats. First week of March.


LE TOUQUET:

High speed weekend Car Rally at end of Sept/Oct. Route covers the countryside including the Vallee de La Course.

Enduro des Sables - a motorcycle endurance race across the sands of Le Touquet's famous Paris-Plage. Expect around 300,000 fellow spectators from all over the continent at this hair-raising event which takes place at the end of February.

Le Touquet & Hardelot Music Festivals: Various venues through each resort held throughout July & August.


BERCK SUR MER:

International kite flying festival. More than 200 participants watched by over 400,000 spectators.


CREQUY:

RAOUL de CREQUY, Fressen. A sound and light show depicting the legend of the knight through dance and singing.


MONTREUIL S/MER;

LES MISERABLES. A sound and light show enactment of the famous novel partly written by Victor Hugo while living at Montreuil s/Mer. For 1 week at the end of July.


ETAPLES:

LE HARENG D'OR. Festival of folklore and dance from different regions of France. Cottages of local fisherman decorated in nautical themes, fish BBQ's on the quay.


ALL OVER THE AREA:

BASTILLE DAY 14th JULY. Fireworks and festivities large and small held in most towns & villages. Join in with the 'neighbours' of your holiday village or gather with the crowds for the grand displays at the major resorts.
